Due to the record rainfall on Monday, the Great Northern Mall, in Clay, suffered significant damage.
Onondaga County Firefighters responded to over 100 calls between Monday evening and Tuesday morning regarding flooded houses, vehicles stranded, roads damaged, and an unstable structure.
The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office reports that the majority of damage has been reported to have occurred in Clay, Cicero and Baldwinsville.
Moyers Corners Fire Department has responded to more than 60 calls for help. The majority of these were basements that had two to three feet or more of water.
The Moyers Corners Fire Department reported that a roof had collapsed at the Great Northern Mall, Clay. Although the former Sears is located in the same building as its current location, it is not owned by Sears.
The roof was partially collapsed and exposed the store, which had been left empty to heavy rainfall. The collapse was described by firefighters as “catastrophic.”
Fire officials report that the most common emergency call was for flooded houses.
According to the Baldwinsville Fire Department, there were also many calls about flooded streets, drivers stranded, and homes flooded.
A Baldwinsville Fire Department press release stated that several people were rescued after they tried to drive their cars on severely flooded roads.
Several roads have also been damaged by heavy flooding.
Canton Street in Baldwinsville, near Connors Road, has become impassable due to shifting and cracking caused by rains.
