The cause of a fire that occurred at Mexico Animal Shelter, on 14 December was determined by an investigation.
According to a release by the Mexico Public Safety Department, the improper disposal of tobacco products was the main cause of fire in the shelter.
On December 14, firefighters went to the Morris Street shelter located in the 100-block at 10:23 am.
The Mexico Public Safety Department was called to 100 Block of Morris Street on Thursday December 14th 2023 at 10:23 am to investigate a fire that had broken out at Mexico Animal Shelter. The responding personnel discovered a burning outside wall and a fire in the attic. MPSD staff and volunteers, as well as Shelter personnel, were able to remove all animals from the building, while finding temporary homes for them. About 30 cats and dogs were removed safely. The building was damaged by smoke and fire in the north and south sections.
The incident did not result in any injuries. Investigations are still underway to determine the cause of fire. The city staff are working hard to reopen animal shelter and control operations as quickly as possible.
Fire was put out quickly, but it had reached the roof and damaged some of the structure as well as the utilities.
The MPSD and shelter staff, along with volunteers, removed the 30 or so dogs and cats from the building. They then found them temporary homes.
On the south side, there was significant damage from fire and smoke. The north side suffered water and smoke damage.
There were no reports of injuries reported to humans or animals.
In the release, the city said it had worked with its insurer to find the best solution to restart shelter services.
Mexico Community Development worked with local organisations to ensure the care and welfare of animals.
In the release, it was stated that all of the cats were rehomed. However, there are still 10 dogs who need homes.
