EDF Renewables & Blattners Energy donated a combined $25,000 to the Hannibal Free Public Library for the “Raise the Roof Campaign”.

Caitlin, the library director accepted the check while wiping away the tears from her eyes.

She said, “It is like winning the lottery here.” The generosity of EDF Renewables, Blattner and their employees is truly inspiring. There is so much goodness in the world and there’s no better season to show it than during the holidays.

After raising $25,000 in July, the library has raised $50,000 to date. Greathouse stressed that time was of the essence to replace the roof which is 37 years old, particularly the skylight.

She doesn’t think the skylight is going to crack anytime soon. It has multiple panels, so if one of them were to break, the whole window wouldn’t be broken.

Greathouse stated that the cracks continue to increase as the skylight is weather damaged. The skylight is currently awaiting an insurance payout for hail-caused cracks. They hope that this will pay for the new skylight.

Greathouse stated that the project needed to be completed much earlier than anticipated due to new cracks on the skylight caused by hail damage. The new cracks extend from the bottom of the window veins to the top.

Greathouse says that if anyone sees her with a blue roof tarp, they should honk at them and wave. When it rains, the library staff have perfected a system for setting up buckets to cover shelves and equipment.

Greathouse has tried to replace the tiles, but they still show signs of water staining. After a while, she stopped replacing the tiles.

Stephanie Miller, Community Engagement for EDF Renewables said that community involvement is important to EDF Renewables.

We want to do our part to help the community and look at things such as the library, which are fundamental to it. Miller explained that when they learned about the “Raise the Roof”, campaign, they set aside funds.

Greathouse stated that they would continue raising funds until they reached their goal. They still have about $150,000 to go.

The funds are important to keep the roof over the library, which has been in place for 123 year. “I don’t believe it can get more important,” said she. I want the library to be around for another 12 years.

Greathouse expressed gratitude for Hannibal’s generosity in supporting the library. We are so grateful. Hannibal opened their hearts and wallets to us and donated numerous times. “They have only just come together.”

EDF also matched Blattners’ donation of $2,500 for the purchase of non-resident library card. More than 80 Hannibal non-residents can now receive a free annual membership on a “first-come, first-served” basis.

In January, the library announced that non-residents will pay $60 for an annual membership.
