Shirley residents were stunned when falling ice struck their homes after 10 pm on Sunday.
Jeff Ilg, a homeowner in the area said: “It was a big bang. It was like an automobile crash.”
When Jeff Rainville ran out with his wife Amelia Rainville to their backyard, they found ice.
Jeff found it difficult to understand. He said, “There was not a single cloud in the sky.”
Jeff rebuilt his home, originally constructed in 1700, over the past eight years.
He couldn’t initially see any damage due to the darkness. When he looked at his roof, however, he became heartbroken.
The ice created a large hole in the roof.
The damage to the attic is worse from inside.
Jeff reported that it had blown through the outer sheeting and the old pine boards, which were an inch thick. It also blew six inches of closed cell foam.
Jeff still has ten pounds of frozen ice.
The Flight Tracker App shows that Jeff’s home is located under a flight path from Logan. He may have a good idea.
Jeff confirmed that a plane had been directly above the aircraft at impact.
Jeff is still unsure if the ice was from a plane or from another source. His insurance company has been contacted to make a claim.
He will eventually contact the airline to find out if the falling snow was the result of a plane.
