On Tuesday, a North Dakotan man was arrested by the Washington Police Department for allegedly attempting to drill into a safe in an apartment building to steal quarters.
Washington Police were called to 1027 Caroline Drive on Monday evening in response to reports of possible robbery. A resident told an officer that a “thin man with auburn-colored hair” had loitered in his apartment for the last few days, while investigating the theft of the packages.
The person had entered the basement laundry room of the apartment complex on several occasions and locked both doors when he did so. One of the washing machine, valued at $1,078, was damaged.
According to a statement, “it appeared that someone tried to get into the coin compartment by drilling into the lock of the compartment.”
Officers also discovered a damaged drill bit while searching the laundry area. They told the residents to contact police immediately if the man returned.
Cartwright also had a black jacket and backpack that contained drill bits, packets of bits, and battery operated hand drills.
Cartwright reported that a landlord had given him permission to wash clothes. However, he was not able to identify the tenant, nor were there any clothes to be cleaned in his room, according to Washington Police Department.
Cartwright’s vehicle was found in the parking lot at the entrance after he was arrested. The vehicle was towed away and an inventory check conducted. This revealed that the car contained a number of burglary instruments, including additional drills, bolt cutters, remnants of a broken lock, handsaws, as well as a large, heavy crowbar.
Cartwright has a criminal record that spans multiple states. He was convicted of robbery crimes in 2016, and again in 2022. Cartwright’s criminal record also revealed that, in the past, he had failed to show up in court and skipped bail.
