In coordination with the Ministry of the Interior the Madrid City Council has strengthened surveillance and security measures by the Municipal Police at synagogues and centers of worship as well as official buildings, and places of Jewish community gathering.
Agents of the National Police also increased surveillance in diplomatic buildings and at the Israeli Embassy in Madrid, which is located in Velazquez Street. This is in response to the anti-Semitic vandalism that appeared in a Madrid synagogue on Sunday, and also the increased threats against the Jewish community in Madrid following the Hamas terrorist attack last Friday.
Platform Against Antisemitism (PAA), a human-rights organization specializing in fighting antisemitism as well as Holocaust denial has issued a condemnation of the graffiti that appeared on a synagogue door with the slogan ‘Free Palestine,’ and a Star of David crossed out. The Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain confirmed that the graffiti had been removed within a couple of hours.
The Movement Against Intolerance, for its part has released a statement that condemns “the terrorist act and we understand it as an antisemitic hatred crime and a criminal against humanity because of the widespread actions towards the populace and the anti-Semitic and political motives behind it.”
They have also denounced all forms of anti-Semitic propagandist that seeks “to legitimize extermination of Jews and elimination of Israel’s State, and rejecting complicity and justification of terrorist acts that today provoke a war between Israel and Hamas.” >>.
