One woman claims that she pleaded for months with her landlord to repair mold and sewer leaks in her house.

MDM Investments of Memphis, a management company in Memphis, has been cited for multiple violations of the Memphis City code. Dominic Barnes and her children, Dominic Barnes says, have been living with this problem since summer.

Barnes, who is constantly bringing the issue to management’s attention, said: “I keep mentioning that the pipes are still exposed, or that the sewage still comes in from the toilet, shower, or sink.” There’s sewage on the lawn, putting everyone else in danger.

Barnes stated that they had moved in to the home back in April. She claimed to have discovered mold in June.

You can smell it. Barnes pointed out some in her bathroom and said: “It smells really bad.”

Mold is visible in her attic and on the pipes. Barnes is worried that the mold may also be causing an allergic reaction in her daughter, who’s 12 years old.

Barnes stated that the owner of the property sent out a technician to repair the issue. Barnes also said multiple attempts were required to get the shower to stop leaking.

Barnes reported that maintenance had replaced the pipe along her side in August. She said that a week later the pipe’s top popped out, which allowed sewage to run through her yard.

Barnes explained that at first, the water and tissue were leaking out of the broken pipes, but then it became raw sewage.

MDM Investments informed Barnes that she will need to leave the house temporarily before Nov. 1, so they could renovate it.

Dominic told the landlord that she cannot afford to move and they won’t be providing any financial assistance.

The city of Memphis was notified by MDM Investments of Memphis on October 5 of two code violations due to the presence of mold and sewage.

Mike McGhee, MDM’s spokesperson, spoke to ABC24 Wednesday.

“Ms. Barnes just had a new sewer installed. We’ve spoken with Memphis code enforcement and are taking care of everything. Barnes has not been evicted, but she was given the choice to leave the house if necessary. We want to avoid being liable for any illness or injury that may have occurred.

Code Enforcement returned to the site on Thursday, to assess the damages. MDM Investments of Memphis has been cited to Shelby County Environmental Court.

Barnes told Barnes: “You have failed my family and me.” Barnes said, “And you are (probably) also failing others if you fail us.”

Barnes claimed that she requested financial compensation in order to get her a UHaul truck and to find a home for herself and her family. For now, Barnes said she will move to a hotel.
