Maurice Doyle is unsure of his future after being forced to live in emergency housing

Maurice Doyle, a Monday morning sleeper, was woken up by his girlfriend who said that their home was on fire.

Doyle said in an interview on Thursday with CBC that “everyone was screaming at me” to leave. “I grabbed the animals, and then I came out to see that it was on fire.”

Fire started in a house on Lime Street, then spread to the Doyle building on Livingstone Street. Both buildings were destroyed, including one that belonged to Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. The building had four apartments in it, including one that Doyle shared with his girlfriend.

Water damage caused by the subsequent rain and firefighting efforts has completely destroyed the entire unit.

The RNC informed CBC News on Thursday that an investigation had yet to be completed into the cause and origin of the fire.

Doyle stated that the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation placed them temporarily in an emergency solution and is working to find a more permanent housing option.

Doyle’s girlfriend and he were able, on Thursday, to return to the building that had been burned to try to recover their items.

We can’t salvage anything from there. Doyle said, “There’s no salvaging out there.” We lost all we owned.

Doyle says he will take it one day at a time, although he would like the future to be more defined.

Doyle said, “I’d like to know what the next step is.”

We don’t even know what to do. “We’re still going to ask for help but need to understand what comes next.” Doyle said. Doyle: “Where are we going now?”

Doyle voiced his concerns about the Livingstone Street housing unit he had been assigned in an earlier interview.

Although this was not his ideal neighbourhood, he says this isn’t how he imagined getting out of the situation.

Doyle said, “We just want a place where we feel comfortable and can be happy. That’s it.”

We just want peace and contentment, yes? Anyone can want that.
