Benton Township Police Department posted a warning on Facebook about the increase in car thefts that they’ve been witnessing. Mostly Kias, Hyundais.
The police believe that a social media hack that has been trending shows just how simple it is for some vehicles to be stolen without a push button ignition or immobilizer. An immobilizer is a device which prevents the vehicle from moving when a key isn’t detected.

Benton Township Police report that in just one month, they’ve seen 50 separate reports of thefts and break-ins on Kias or Hyundais. They all had the same kind of damage. It only takes minutes.
Abrams said that the “Steering Wheel was Popped, the portion of ignition was Exposed, and The Offender was Able to Use a Device That You Can Buy At Any Store To Start These Vehicles With.”
Since years, thefts of Kias or Hyundais are a problem. Around 9 million vehicles have been affected. The two companies offer their customers free software upgrades and steering wheel locks to those who aren’t eligible.
We continue to encourage all eligible customers to install the software update that we created and released earlier this year. This upgrade will restrict the ignition of the car in the event that a criminal tries to steal the locked vehicle with no key.
The police also said they work with the local community, and that they can assist in hiding GPS trackers such as air tags and steering wheel locks and installing them.
Benton Township Police have reported that they recovered 95% stolen cars and made arrests. The police hope to start a free steering-wheel lock distribution program, called CLUB.
