A fire broke out at a building commercial in East Providence on Wednesday. An investigation into its cause is currently underway.
Michael Carey, acting fire chief at Patton Road, said that the facility produces cardboard packaging. The loading dock was filled with smoke.
Carey, a reporter for 12 News, said that at first firefighters had difficulty finding the fire.
He said, “It had been hidden literally behind cardboard pallets.” The whole area has an enormous fire load, and my guys did a fantastic job. “They got there quickly… They probably stretched out over 300 feet to get there.”
Carey stated that it took firefighters hours to extinguish and ventilate the fires in the building. There were no injuries.
He added, “There was quite a bit of fuel inside but we were able to keep it running.”
Carey stated that firefighters managed to put out the fire before it caused significant structural damage.
He explained that there was some roof damage, just above the area where the fire started. However, it wasn’t enough to create structural issues.
The 40,000-square-foot building is not the first to catch fire. East Providence Police told 12 News that firefighters had responded to the same address for a trailer fire in September 2009. The fire then spread into the building that police say was once home to National Packaging.
At this point, the cause of Wednesday’s fire remains unknown.
