A family from Appleshaw was devastated by a fire that destroyed their house just weeks before the Christmas holiday. On December 2, two homes were destroyed, leaving the Burgess’s in an extremely difficult situation.
Fire, which started around 3:30am, rapidly engulfed both cottages and destroyed the first floor. The Burgess family, consisting of husband and wife Rich and Katie, both 31, and their three children–12-year-old Jake, 14-year-old Riley, and 5-year-old Harper–narrowly escaped the blaze. According to the family, the fire started in one bedroom due to an electrical device catching on fire.
Burgess, whose family owned cottages in the area for more than 80 years, not only lost their homes, but they also had to part with Christmas gifts, clothes, toys and other treasured possessions. Community members responded with compassion to the tragedy of the fire, launching a fundraiser to assist the family in rebuilding their life.
Laura, who is a member of the family, created a page to raise money with an aim of PS10,000. She wanted to help provide support essential for her family. The latest update shows that nearly PS3,700 was raised. This is a testament to the generosity of the local community.
Riley and Jake, who are both members of the Andover Darts Academy in Andover, held a charity event on Friday, December 5, at Andover’s Central Club. Riley and Jake are members of Andover Darts Academy, which organized a donation event at the Andover Central Club on December 5.
Laura thanked the Appleshaw Community, Andover Darts Academy and all those who contributed and donated to her family in this difficult time.
While the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was unable to determine the exact cause of the fire they reported significant damages. One male had to be taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. Multiple crews used equipment and multiple firefighting teams to fight the flames.
Richie Burgess is the owner of Burgos Pet Shop in George Yard. Phil Nightingale, a fellow businessman, and Cllr Iris Anderson, a local councillor, have also offered their support. The business community in Andover was urged to donate to help the Burgess Family recover from their devastating loss. Phil’s shop, the Record Box, is located opposite Burgos Pet Shop. It has a collection tin.
Phil Nightingale’s and Iris Anderson’s call for help reflects the community uniting to offer comfort and assistance during this difficult time. Businesses and individuals are uniting to provide assistance in the hopes of alleviating the immediate needs for the Burgess Family and helping them to rebuild their lives following the tragic event.
