Early Wednesday morning, Hurricane Idalia, a Category 3-hurricane, made landfall on Florida’s Big Bend. It pushed a wall-like of water that caused destruction into coastal communities. A major interstate was shut down and hundreds of thousands were left without power. Early Wednesday afternoon, Hurricane Idalia, now Category 1, had already reached Georgia. The Nature Coast was hit with winds of 125mph in Keaton Beach, causing immediate rescue efforts and damage assessment. Early assessments are encouraging, given the power of Idalia. Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday that efforts to restore power were in progress across the entire state. The report from Idalia indicated no major damage.
According to him, a person could have been killed by the storm during a “traffic accident” being investigated in state police. It may be confirmed that this was a fatality. DeSantis stated that the incident hasn’t been verified yet. DeSantis said, “This one’s in the hopper and is currently being reviewed.” According to Florida Highway Patrol, two men were killed in traffic accidents caused by rain on Wednesday. One man died in Alachua County, while another in Pasco County.
DeSantis stated that “the eye of hurricane Idalia left Florida.” We’re still trying to assess what exactly is happening on the ground where the first impact occurred.
Deanne Criswell told reporters on Wednesday it is too early to estimate the cost of recovery. She said that it would take some time to fully understand the damages and the preliminary assessment. It will be a while before we have a complete picture of what the impact is. There are reports of widespread flooding, from heavily populated areas around Tampa Bay to Cedar Key and other isolated enclaves in Big Bend. Cedar Key, Idalia’s greatest threat, experienced a storm surge of 6.8 feet early on Wednesday. This flooded streets, and some buildings and homes. This was a new record in the city. However, it did not appear to have reached the maximum 16 feet forecast by the National Hurricane Center.
Webcams in the area were streaming live streams that showed shed roofs being ripped off near Horseshoe Beach. Buildings at Steinhatchee Marina had been completely submerged, and Cedar Key roads were underwater. WeatherSTEM reported that spots across the Big Bend area were receiving 2 to 6 inch of rain, as Idalia moved into the interior. A peak rainfall of 8.5 inches was recorded east of Tallahassee near the Georgia-Florida border.
