A house fire broke out in Wichita early Friday morning. It was so hot that crews were unable to get inside and search for survivors. The fire department had to use a demolition crew to remove the walls and roof of the house so they could safely search.

Around 12:40 in the morning, it was found near Hillside Avenue and Douglas Street on S. Volutisa 100.

Fire crews arrived to find the house engulfed by flames.

Nicholas Woods said that the fire was spreading through the entire front of the home. “The rear half had already burned away, but it continued to spread forward,” stated Nicholas Woods. “As soon as we got there, the fire was so intense that we couldn’t go in and look for survivors.”

Owner has let transients stay at the house. The owner has allowed transient people to stay in the home.

The firefighters were forced to concentrate on the three buildings. The home that was on fire had been destroyed, but the two other buildings sustained some damage.

WFD called the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department and an demolition company in order to determine if there was anyone inside the burning house.

Woods stated that “we’re going pull off the roof this front…and maybe tear down some walls” to allow for our team to be able to safely search the front of the home. We’re also going to drain the water from the basement below and do a thorough search in the area.

WFD reports that they completed the search of rubble on Friday at 4:00 pm.

Investigators now are looking at what caused the fire. The investigators know that there was no utility connected to the house.
