The Helensburgh fire department is using ‘temporary’ supports to raise parts of the roofing as a security measure.
According to the fire chiefs, reinforced autoclaved aerated concret (RAAC) has been used for the construction of this building and thirteen other fire stations throughout Scotland.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said the stations that needed repairs should be rebuilt.
Some people say they cannot afford to buy the items.
RAAC caught the attention of public this week, when over 100 schools in England closed because of its danger. The material was widely used to build public buildings from the 1950s until the 1990s.
The race is on to discover which building may be affected, and the measures needed to keep them safe.

Argyll &Bute council confirmed that on Monday “mitigation” measures were put into place in Helensburgh at John Logie Baird Elementary School due to RAAC’s presence.
Iain Morris (SFRS, acting director, asset management) said, “The safety and security of staff are paramount. We took immediate action as soon as roof defects were detected in 14 sites of ours in 2019.
“We put up temporary supports for strengthening areas of roofing, and we maintained operations at these locations. This will be closely monitored.
Rebuilding is usually the best and safest option.
As a public service, we don’t have the capital budget necessary to rebuild those locations or keep up with the ongoing backlog of capital projects to upgrade or maintain our estate.
Jackie Baillie (MSP Helensburgh and Lomond) has previously urged the Scottish Government’s emergency plan to renovate all of the country’s fire estates, including Helensburgh.
More than 150 stations lack any type of shower and 100 are lacking drying equipment.
There are 11 places in the world where there is no access to any water.
Helensburgh firefighters identified the flat roof of their fire station as requiring urgent repairs. It was made using RAAC. Cost is approximately PS7m.
Ms Baillie noted: “It’s shocking that so many schools in England were closed at short notice.
Helensburgh Fire station, for example, was found to contain the same type of material that is forcing closures in other buildings.
“The SNP must be firm in their response, and give cast-iron guarantees that any buildings with confirmed RAAC is indeed safe. In the event they are not then urgent steps should be taken to provide alternative suitable accommodation.
This type of unrest in England is not something that can be repeated here.
It is important to deal with this issue properly. Otherwise, it may have an impact on both the safety and security of the employees as well the community.
Humza Yoursaf of the PA reported this week on a desktop review that will probably take “somemonths” but that mitigations would be implemented where risk is present.
He added: “It has been important to perform the desk review. However, it is fair to also say that when sites believe a more physical investigation may be required, that will happen.
This will probably take several months, given the size of our estate.
“But of course it is not binary.
“We have received returns from local authorities for 35 schools that have RAAC. We have also implemented mitigations in order to eliminate any immediate concerns about safety, either for pupils or staff.”
