Idalia, a Category 3-hurricane with winds up to 125 miles per hour, made landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast early Wednesday morning.
CBS12 News’ Dani Travis visited the hardest-hit areas after Hurricane Idalia hit Keaton Beach. This is about 20 miles south from Perry.
U.S. 27, a road that connects Gainesville to Perry is all too familiar. However, after Hurricane Idalia hit the area it now looks more like a confusing maze.
Tufan Turkmen said, “That is the only word that I can use to describe it. It’s catastrophic.” Turkmen was a Tampa volunteer who had come for clean-up efforts.
The wind speed of triple digits caused massive trees to fall along the side of the road in Branford. At their final resting places, many brought down powerlines and damaged fences.
CBS12’s initial signs of damage to a building are seen further up, in Mayo. This dairy farm has a line of straight tin roofs that have been removed from several buildings.
Idalia showed her intensity in Perry, but she did not show any remorse.
Turkmen: “I have dealt with many storms, but this one was just way too intense for a town of such size.”
For some, the sight of holes in buildings’ sides, roofs being ripped from businesses and signs being wiped off as if nothing happened is all too common.
“I’m a lifelong resident. David Winsted is a long-time resident of Perry. He said, “I’ve lived through tornados and hurricanes in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s.”
It’s Winsted, a more than 120 year-old house, still standing, in Perry’s heart, with only a few pieces of debris. This gives this resident something to be happy about.
Winsted said, “I had a big old, rotten tree that I hoped wouldn’t be coming this way.”
It didn’t.
Residents say that even though emotional scars remain, it is time to begin picking up the pieces.
