Recent inspection of facility reveals damage
Alamodome will undergo a major renovation in preparation for the Men’s NCAA Final Four scheduled to take place there in 2025. But first, maintenance must be done on the structure.
San Antonio has spent more than one million dollars to repair parts of its roof, and also remove mold that was discovered during an inspection. Mold was caused by water damage on the ceiling in the 30 year-old building.
Richard Oliver, Communications Manager of Convention & Sports Facilities of San Antonio, said that “a few weeks ago, the City was performing its regular inspections of Alamodome and some of upper cavity of upper still stairwells concourses were affected by water damage, resulting in mold.”
Water damage of approximately 3,100 square foot was found along the ceiling.
An industrial hygienist was called in to inspect the building. Oliver said that he was able “to discover what was going on in these crevices and cavities in the upper concourse stairwell”
Cotton Commercial USA, Inc. was awarded a contract worth $1.2million by the city to perform mold remediation. The city says that the hotel occupancy tax will fund the mold removal. It is included in their Capital Improvement Program for fiscal years 2024-2029.
It is expected that the removal of roof tiles and the repair work will take between four to six months on each corner.
According to the city, the mold is not a threat or a safety concern for people who attend events at Alamodome.
Oliver said that people won’t be able to see all of the construction work in the Alamodome that is being carried out for the NCAA Men’s Final Four.
Oliver also said that construction on 18 new suites has begun at the Alamodome to prepare for the Final Four. New concessions will be available in the upper level.
We’re installing those new suites. By the Final Four, we will have 70 suites at the Alamodome. They’re also working on the concessions, something that they have been aiming for for a while. They’ve already made the concourses wider and they look great. Oliver said that they are cleaning up all of this and improving it.
Oliver said that construction of the Final Four was on time. The dome will be upgraded for $29 Million to ensure it can host major events.
Oliver said that the building is 30 years old and requires maintenance. They are constantly inspecting everything, including the building’s roof and infrastructure.
