Amounting to 70,000 Euros, the Valderrobres City Council awarded an air-conditioning company the contract for the purchase of machinery that will allow the temperature in the pool room to be maintained at a constant level. This is a complex operation during winter when temperatures outside are low.
The thermal air conditioners and ventilation systems were installed in order to bring the covered pool into use. However, comfort issues quickly became apparent during the coldest winter months. The water is at the right temperature but the temperature of the surrounding air was not. This led the City Council to commission a thermal study.
Up to six units of air-conditioning were considered for the installation. This is a combination of a polycarbonate enclosure and welded metal frame. These systems were not sized according to the enclosure type. Multiple heat losses occur due to high thermal transmission and infiltration, particularly during nighttime hours when temperatures drop and the humidity outside increases.
According to the study, commissioned by council officials, it is necessary to install a heating system that uses additional energy. The water temperature must therefore be maintained between 24 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius. However, it is important that the surrounding temperature remains stable at 1 to 2 degrees higher than the glass temperature, so long as the temperature does not go above 30 degrees Celsius.
Carlos Bone explained to us that the problem was due to an incorrect sizing for the air conditioner in the pool. This was because the air conditioner that was installed in Valderrobres was not able to keep the temperature at a comfortable level. A councilor stated that “a study was ordered to find out what additional installation would be needed to ensure the proper functioning of the swimming pool.”
Bone predicted that the air conditioner would be “installed” within “four weeks.” He also noted that it was not difficult to do, as there is no work involved. The company explained that the only thing which could cause a delay in the installation was if there wasn’t enough stock or supply. However, the machinery is available and can be purchased on the market. He added that the mayor said “it is unlikely to be necessary for a pool closure for long, only three or four day when the equipment will be installed and tested.”
