Volunteers in Vermont used snow shovels to remove inches of mud Wednesday after torrential rainfall and flooding flooded communities. The floods stranded people at home, closed roads and left streets littered.

The Winooski River, which was swollen and flooded the basements and first floors of the downtown Montpelier area, destroyed furniture and merchandise.

Historic floods have been more damaging than Tropical Storm Irene in many areas, closing down dozens of streets and destroying thousands of homes, businesses, and roads.

Pumps are working non-stop to remove floodwaters from the basement of Nelson Ace Hardware, Barre, Vermont.

Bob Nelson said that there are nine feet of standing water in the basement.

The owner was shocked to see water rushing in downtown Barre. This is normally the lifeline of the town.

The store can only sell a few pumps while the damages are repaired.

It’s been 40 years since I started. “It was heartbreaking to not be there for the community.” Nelson stated.

Jennifer Morrison is the state commissioner of public safety. She says that the crisis has not yet ended. People are still being saved, roads have been blocked, and there are flash flood warnings with further rain expected.

Vermonters: Be on your guard and do not take any risks.

Morrison reports that more than 200 rescues or evacuations took place in Lamoille County since Sunday.

The Governor of Virginia, Phil Scott, visited the disaster areas with FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell. This was a day after Joe Biden had declared an emergency. Phil Scott and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell toured disaster zones.

Senator Bernie Sanders of the United States, who has also visited disaster zones, stated, “We will be on site as soon as we can.” We will bring in as many people to assist people with the bureaucracy.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that there were 12 weather/climate catastrophes in this country with a total loss of over $1 billion.

In Montpelier (population 8,000), 8,000 people volunteered to clean up mud and move damaged goods outside of businesses that were inundated. Peter Walke said that businesses had been forced to refuse people because of the overwhelming interest they received in helping downtown businesses.
